CSA 12-AD, 10¢ blue (lower right margin copy) tied neat RICHMOND / VA. // MAR / 20 cds on blue commercially made cover (small sealed tear at top) to Miss Lise G. Skinner, Care of Col. F. G. Skinner (1st Virginia), Richmond, Va.; while this is technically an overpaid drop use (local use would be 2¢ rate), this was not uncommon as soldiers often put stamps on envelopes and gave to other soldiers to drop in the mail for them. This is particularly pointed up by the different ink for the addressee and routing. Lt. Col. Frederick Gustavus Skinner was a colorful old war-horse whose exploits were legend. He isthe subject of a column in The American Stamp Dealer & Collector.  $250.

The writer of the brief letter was the previous postmaster, E. P. Verner who was replaced as M April 1st 1861 by D. D. Verner, undoubtedly a relative. The town’s name was changed to Retreat in 1891 and the PO was discontinued in 1901.  The addressee is J. E. Hagood Esq., Pickens, S.C. Wonderful showy use! $375.

Rutherford, Amelia Court House, Virginia.Brown cancels are quite scarce. The CSA Catalog puts a 200% premium on a brown cancel on cover thus CCV $360. $220.

CSA 12c-AD, 10¢ blue lower right corner single tied RICHMOND / VA. // MAY / 14 [1864] on cover to Miss Elsie G. Skinner, Care of Col. F. G. Skinner, Richmond, Va. thus an OVERPAID DROP use. Col. Frederick Gustavus Skinner (1814-1894) was the Lt. Col of the 1st Va. Infantry when he was severely wounded in the chest at 2nd Manassas.  He never returned to active duty but was nevertheless promoted to Colonel in July 1863 and retired to the Invalid Corps.  A period notation on the reverse dates this cover to May 11 & 13, 1864.  Col Skinner’s son, P. Thornton Skinner, was a private in Co E 4th Va. Cav. at this time and is the one who most likely sent this cover home to his sister. Sealed flap tear. Ex Kohn   $200.

Shelby Springs, Alabama, was first developed as a resort in 1839. In 1862, the resort became a training ground for Confederate troops and was known as Camp Winn. Later in the war, it was converted to a hospital with 350 beds.

William Thomas Abrahams (1834-1898) was a 31-year-old physician from McKinley, Ala., when he enlisted at Perry, Ala., as a private 25 April; 1861, but did daily duty as a physician. He was mustered into Company D, Alabama 43rd Infantry but discharged for promotion on 10 May 1862. He was promoted to Surgeon and commissioned into Field & Staff, Alabama 43rd Infantry. He attended UVA 1851-53 and received his medical degree from New York Medical College 1855. 12/31/1862 - Chief Surgeon, Gen. Archibald Gracie's Brigade, Dept of E. Tennessee; 08/24/1864 - Member, Board of Examining Surgeons, 3rd Congressional. Much more at Find-A-Grave memorial 85804416

Burt, Prattville, Ala. Sent from Thomas W. Smith, a correspondence researched by Galen Harrison and with accompanying paperwork. Smith was married to M.R. Burt’s daughter, Margaret. Stamp is not torn and looks like it a flap could (operative word) be carefully turned to display both from the front with bottom flap turned down. Ex Roger Ballard. $250.

Telegraph, Salem, Va. with docketing up left side “John H. Allen, Wytheville, Va Dec 26, 1863.” This is the SECOND USE OF A TWICE-USED ADVERSITY COVER to Col. Jno. McCauley. The original, with a penciled address, was a Soldier's Due10" use with the first address completely erased. The handstamped "10" is just visible below the bottom margin of the stamp. An extremely cool twice-used adversity cover! $325.

CSA 12, 10¢ blue (4 margins) tied JACKSON (Mississippi) STRAIGHTLINE cancel (scarcer type SL-07A early state with ball on J intact, CCV $1,500) on clean cover to Mrs. Sol. A Browne, Care L. L. Fraser Sr., Mechanicsville P.O., Sumter Dist(rict) So Ca, 2017 CSA certificate. The large Jackson SL was used from late May 1863 to July 1863 (EKU May 29, 1863). This is one of the few that can be definitively dated with the docketing of May 29, 1863, up the left side – VERY EARLY USE, Ex Doug Baker. $1,200.

CSA 12a, 10¢ milky blue left sheet margin with gum stains, manuscript canceled “H.S. College Va / Nov 10/64” on fresh cover to Miss Wood, Farmington, Charlottesville, Virginia. Most unusual in that the stamp is sealed on the front of the cover with a wax seal with what seems to be the "all seeing eye" in the center; the text in the seal partially reads "---- WATCH OER YOU.Perhaps the wax seal was used to help affix the stamp, thus an adversity use, as perhaps the gum wasn’t doing the job (not uncommon). Or perhaps it was just decorative but one would more often see that to seal back flaps. A former owner speculated the wax was perhaps struck with a fraternity signet ring. A most unusual and attractive use. $250.

Hale Blewston (Blue Stone) Tazewell County Va. (population 27) ONE TINY TOWN TO ANOTHER. White Gate today is simply called a “cultural feature” in Giles County. The Blue Stone post office reported opened in 1828 and closed in 1904, apparently vanished from existence.  Ex Harrison. $200.
