CSA 12, 10¢ blue tied with pen strokes on cover to Lieut J. C. Purdy, 1st Louisiana Artillery, Mobile, Ala., with docketing dating the contents to Aug. 30th, 1864; stamp and cover faulty but highly unusual with contemporary pin closure of the back flaps (left side flap replaced). Cover open on 3 sides to display and closure difficulties evident from the heavy smearing of mucilage along the flaps. Highly unusual adversity cover. Ex Doug Baker. $350.

Jacob Carman Purdy (1834-1916) enlisted at New Orleans, May 26, 1861, as a private. 1st Lt. Jacob Purdy served with Companies B, E, and G, 1st Louisiana Heavy Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia. Military records show him stationed at Redoubt No. 6, Mobile, Ala., April 1, 1864. He was paroled May 10, 1865, at Meridian, Miss., after surrender to US Maj. Gen. Cantey by CSA Lt. Gen. R. Saylor. His wife was Annie Newman Purdy (1845-1912). They are buried at the Walker Cemetery in Fayetteville, Arkansas. His middle name sometimes seen spelled Carmen instead of Carman.
