CSA 12, 10¢ blue (4 large even margins) tied RICHMOND Va. JUL 16 1864 circular datestamp on narrow commercially-made blue cover to Mrs. A.L. Rives, Cobham Depot, Va.C.R.R. Albemarle Co. Virginia, with docketing up left side 15 July 1864. Small tear at top and back flap faults but lovely stamp/cover. $130.

Alfred Landon Rives was born in 1830 in Paris, France, the son of William Cabell Rives, the distinguished minister to France. During the War, Alfred was acting chief engineer for the State of Virginia and later for the Confederate States, which position he held until the end of the War as a Colonel. He was one of the two Chiefs of the Corps of Engineers to Gen. Robert E. Lee.
