CSA 11, 10¢ blue (4 margins, small faults) tied perfectly struck WOODSTOCK Va. AUG 15 CDS on cover to Christian Streit Baker Care of Capt. John Glaize Asst Qr. Master of Maj. Genl. Ewells Corps Army N. Va. (Army of Northern Virginia). Ex John Vagnetti. $160.

Christian Streit Baker (1839-1924) served as a private in Company A, 5th Virginia Infantry cover, part of the famed Stonewall Brigade. Private Baker was captured and confined at Camp Chase April 30, 1864. He was exchanged at City Point February 25, 1865, and paroled at Winchester two months later. After the war, he was a successful merchant in Winchester.

Capt. John Glaize (1822-1901) was a quartermaster staff officer throughout the war and a well-known Quartermaster for Stonewall Jackson’s Second Corps. After the war, he lived in Winchester and was active in local politics as sheriff, treasurer, jailer, and magistrate. The Baker and Glaize families were related by marriage.
