CSA 11a, 10¢ milky blue (4 margins, rumple/crease at left) tied WASHINGTON Ga. circular datestamp on cover to George H. Thompson Esqr, Glennville, Barbour County, Alabama. $150.

George Hargraves Thompson (1814-1896) of Glennville, Alabama, was a planter and slave owner. He was married to Sarah Willis Richardson (1821-1891). In 1840, Thompson traded his home and a portion of land to Massilon Glenn in exchange for the Cedar Heights Plantation. Initially, the Thompson family grew cotton on the 12,000 acre plantation, but one of his sons later cultivated pecans on the land. In the 1860 US Census, his real estate holdings were valued at $19,000 and his personal estate at $80,000. The 1870 census valued Thompson's real estate at $20,000 and his personal estate at $4,000. He doubtless took a financial hit from the Civil War.
