 Unidentified town, most likely Virginia with oblong boxed PAID and ms. “5” with “PO BHW” at upper right, addressed to Genl J.L. Kemper, Manassas Junction, Va. A little research would doubtless identify the town and sender. Opening tear at top, not affecting markings. Ex Harrison. $120.

James Lawson Kemper
(1823-1895) was a lawyer and confederate general in the war as well as the 37th governor of Virginia period he was the youngest brigade commander and only non-professional general officer in the division that led Pickett's Charge, during which he was severely wounded.
