BERRYVILLE Va. SEP 1 (1861) circular datestamp with matching PAID and manuscript “5” (type A) on outer folded lettersheet to James B. Newman, Barboursville, Orange County, Virginia, with “Paid JWW” at top. Ex David Kohn and John Vagnetti with Brian Green penciled note on verso stating “two recorded” to which I cannot attest, but it is not common. $225.

James Barbour Newman (1803-1900) was born in Barboursville, Orange County, Va. and built Burlington, a historic plantation house on the National Register of Historic Places. He married Sarah Battaile Fitzhugh (1811-1864) on May 25, 1830; she died June 6, 1864. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 3 daughters. He lived in Orange, Va. in 1850 and Dan River Va., in 1880. He was the nephew of James Barbour, 18th governor of Virginia (1812-1814) as well as holder of other political offices.
