ORANGE C.H. Va AUG 10 cds on soldier letter without further postal markings (no due nor paid nor rate – not so listed in the CSA Catalog) endorsed from J. C. Zimmerman, Co. D, 57 Regt. N.C.T. on adversity cover made from a printed sewing machine instruction sheet to Mrs. M.A. Zimmerman, Bethania PO, Forsyth County, N.C. Ex John Vagnetti. $250.

James Calvin Zimmerman
was a 29-year old farmer when he mustered into Co. D. 57th NC Infantry. He was wounded in the right hand at Fredericksburg 12-13-1862, taken prisoner 1-7-1863 at Rappahannock Station and confined at Point Lookout, exchanged a few days later at City Point, taken prisoner again 720-1864 at Winchester and confined to Camp Chase. He arrived for exchange at Cox’s Landing, James River, Va. 3-10-1865. Postwar, he and wife Adeline (Spease) settled in Missouri. The Zimmerman family letters from 1779-1010 are at Duke University Libraries.
