NC. Endorsed at top “William H. Brotherton, Co. K, 23 Regt NC Troops.” $170.

William H. Brotherton (1840-1904) enlisted on August 20, 1862, at the age of 22. His name appears on the Confederate Roll of Honor, as he and three other soldiers captured 14 Yankees near Winchester, Va., in June 1863. He was captured as a POW at Winchester on September 19, 1864, not long after sending this letter. He was confined at Point Lookout until his exchange on March 18, 1865, and survived the war.
