RICHMOND VA. DEC 28 (1864) circular datestamp (Powell type 6L) with matching DUE 10 (type P) on cover to O.P. Berry, Williamston PO Anderston Dist SC / Care of J. H. Arnold (?) Package. The latter annotation is apparently a private regional mail service similar to Peterson’s Package, Clark’s Package, Millway Carrier, and others, but more research needs to be done – a perfect postal history project for someone with curiosity and tenacity. There was a J.H. Arnold in the Confederate Army – a good place to start. At top of the cover is the mandated soldier’s endorsement “From J.B. Ligon Co. I Hampton Legion S.C.V.”  Ex Harry Muldrow. $125.

James Blackman Ligon (1837-1908) was a 1st Lieut. in Co. I, Hampton’s Legion. After the war, he was a prominent citizen of Greenville, SC, serving as Chief of Police for many years. A copy of his obit accompanies.

Price: $125
