RICHMOND Va. FEB 11 (1864) circular datestamp (Powell type 5g) with matching DUE 10 (type P) on cover to Mrs. Belinda McIntosh, Martindale, Mecklenburg Co. N.C. with mandated soldier’s endorsement R.J. Sifford, Co. G. 52nd N.C. Reg. Ex Harry Muldrow. $100.

Robert J. Sifford was 24 years old when he enlisted as a private in Co. G, N.C. 52nd Infantry. He was listed as wounded in the right leg and taken prisoner at Gettysburg July 3, 1863 – part of the ill-fated Pickett’s charge. He was hospitalized there, transferred to Chester, PA, and then to Baltimore, MD. He took the Oath of Allegiance May 14, 1865, at Point Lookout, MD, where he was held at Hammond General Hospital.
