(RICHMOND Va.) PAID 2 (type C, CV $750) – ONE OF ONLY FIVE EXAMPLES according to the late Peter Powell. It was only used June 5-November 18, 1861. Used on a cover to Mrs. Wm King Care Alexn H. Rutherfoord Esq Richmond Virginia. Reduced at left. Also a “Pd 5” in manuscript at upper right. This correspondence is widely known used from Manassas (Tudor Hall, Va.), which may be its origin. I have handled numerous covers from this correspondence with such origin and no postmark, as the Tudor Hall postmark was not in use until August 1861. The VPHS Catalog (page 441) shows this (or very similar) manuscript cancel from Tudor Hall used from June 1- August 9, 1861, further narrowing the date of mailing. The Battle of First Manassas (Bull Run) was July 21, 1861. The cover could have been marked “Pd 5” by a clerk at Tudor Hall but then carried to Richmond and correctly marked PAID 2 as a drop use. Alternatively, the Pd 5 could have been made by a Richmond clerk, although that seems less likely to me. Ex Harry Muldrow. $800.
