TUDOR HALL VA. DEC  11 1861 cds with matching PAID 10 (Type C, CV $150) on cover to Judge John W. Inzer, Ashville, St. Clair County, Ala. Ex Roger Ballard and John Vagnetti. $150.

John Washington Inzer (1834-1928), born in Georgia but in his early years, he moved to Ashville, Ala. He was admitted to the Alabama bar in 1855 or 1859 (conflicting sources). In 1861, he was the youngest man to be elected to Alabama’s Secession Convention. He was elected Probate Judge of St. Clair County in 1859. He joined the Confederate army in 1862 and rose to the rank of Lt. Col. in the 58th Alabama Infantry, Clayton’s Brigade, Stewart’s Division, Hood’s Corp, Army of Tennessee. He also had service in Co. L, Alabama 18th Infantry. Inzer was slightly wounded in the arm at Chickamauga in September 1863, and wounded and taken prisoner at Missionary Ridge, Tenn. (Chattanooga), 25 Nov 1863 and confined the rest of the war to Johnson’s Island, Ohio, until 1 July 1865.  Military records describe him as age 30, dark complexion, dark hair and eyes, 6’ 1” in height. Postwar, he was elected to the State Senate in 1874 and also served as Circuit Judge for Blount County for a term.
