RICHMOND Va. bold clear MAY 23 1862, (type 3a) CDS with matching DUE 5 (type O) and blue crayon “5”on soldier’s cover to Mrs. Howe P. Cochran Charlottesville Virginia with endorsement of H.P. Cochran 1st Reg Va Artillery. Top back flap missing, Ex Harry Muldrow. $140.

Howe Peyton Cochran (1834-1892) enlisted as a sergeant July 18, 1861, at Richmond. He attended the University of Virginia (1854-1858). He was appointed to the Virginia Military Institute, (the oldest cadet at time of admission) but he left after 6 weeks to enlist. He mustered into Virginia Albemarle Light Artillery on August 1, 1861. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant with Pegram’s Brigade and captain and major in Pickett’s Division as an ordnance officer. He served as the first superintendent of the City of Charlottesville school system. He was a member of one of the most prominent and influential families in central Virginia.
