Alexander Smith Webb II (1840-1938), known as “Tip” is writing here to his sister, Susan Ann “Suny” Webb (1831-1905). He was 20 years old when he enlisted as a private with his brother, Richard. He also served in Co. G NC 44th Infantry. He was taken prisoner at Petersburg August 27, 1864, and confined to Old Capitol Prison in Washington D.C. He was transferred to Ft. Delaware December 16, 1864, and released from there June 14, 1865. He was variously promoted to Sergt Major, 3rd Lieut. and Adjutant. Afterwards, he married Annabella Moore, and had two children. He moved to Warren County where he served as Justice of the Peace, town commissioner in Ridgeway, NC, in 1872, and chairman of the county board of education in 1901. He died there, but is buried with his wife at Oakwood Historic Cemetery in Raleigh, NC. A picture of A.S. Webb Jr. (or II – seen both ways) can be found in the book Our Webb Kin of Dixie by William James Webb, 1940.
