Care of Col. Blanding. With pencil docketing: “From sister A.D.R.” At one time, these markings were considered provisional, but recent prevailing wisdom is that the stampless cannot be distinguished from the provisional and is therefore considered provisional only if unused. Robert James Dick (1831-1888) served as a corporal in the 9th Palmetto Regiment of the South Carolina Volunteers, also known as the Sumter Greys. The regiment was organized in April 1861 for a term of one year’s service. They disbanded in April 1862, with many men joining other South Carolina regiments. Dick later served as an officer. Dick mustered in on April 8, 1861, and out on April 1, 1862. The unit was sent to Virginia and assigned to Gen. D. R. Jones’ Brigade, Department of Northern Virginia. He was married to Kate McDowell Dick; they had 8 children.
