Charles Ferdinand Holst (1813-1871) was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and died in Chester, S.C. His mother supposedly financed his journey to America by giving him her jewels. He married Lady Ida Jeannette Eloise de Rosendahl, b. 1817, also of Denmark. Charles and Jeanette came to America in the mid to late 1830s, probably into Philadelphia, Pa., then to Charleston and ultimately Chester, S.C. Charles was trained as a portrait painter and artist in Denmark, but became a master carriage maker in South Carolina, as there was no market for his artistic talents in the Chester area at that time.
