James M. Couper enlisted August 3, 1861, at Iuka, Miss. A.C.S. 20th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers was on the Field and Staff muster roll where he was detailed in the Engineers Department by order of Maj. Genl. Loring. He was promoted to Sergt. Major August 10, 1861; shown as Capt.  Nov 8, 1863, yet Lieutenant July 1, 1864. He was surrendered to Brig. Gen. E. McCook by Maj. Gen. Sam Jones, CSA at Tallahassee Fla. May 10, 1865.
