Chickasawhatchee is a name derived from the Hitchiti language (Creek Nation) meaning “council house.” Variant names are Chicasawhatchie , Chickasawhachee, "Chickasawhatchie, and Chickasyhatchy. Named for the creek that is a tributary to the Flint River. The town was incorporated in 1856, but the town’s municipal charter was officially repealed in 1995. A significant event was the Battle of Chickasawhatchee Swamp in 1836, a key clash in the Southern Indian Wars. The community was also known as Hortonville. It is now an unincorporated community in Terrell County.
