(ATHENS Ga) PAID 5 (type B) struck twice and PAID 10 (type b) struck once, UNLISTED Confederate stampless cover format; no town postmark but the known correspondence clearly point to Athens, Ga. origin. Click here to see 1973 PF certificate incorrectly calling this a Kingston Tenn. provisional. It was submitted to the PF by John F. Rider (1900-1985), a signer of the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists and a well-known collector in his day. The cover is addressed to William S. McEwen, Kingston, Tennessee, with content docketings up the left side of “R.N. McEwen, 1 September 1861.” There is recorded correspondence from R.N. McEwen while he was in Athens to William S. McEwen who was in Kingston (image of same included and currently for sale separately as I write this). Penciled notes on verso of “C.J.P. page 39” (Charles J. Phillips (1863-1940, illustrious old-time dealer at the turn of the 20th century who handled industrialist Arthur Hind’s estate. Phillips declared this cover likely unique.) Ex Rider. $800.
