SPARTA Ga. DEC 16 (1861) red circular datestamp with matching PAID 10 (type D, CCV $300) to Private Saml H. Wiley, Care of A.Y. Stokes & Co., Richmond, Va. on soldier’s cover endorsed by Co. E, Capt. T.G. Smith, 15th Regt of Georgia Vols T.W. Thomas Commdg (charge box No. 8). Year has to be 1861 because Thomas resigned in March 1862 due to disability. Rated 10¢ for distance greater than 500 miles. Ex Dietz Collection. $250.

Samuel Harris Wiley (1823-1898) enlisted July 15, 1861, mustering in to Co. E, Georgia 15th Infantry (Hancock Volunteers). He was from Hancock County, Ga. and detailed as clerk for the brigade quartermaster in October 1862. He surrendered at Appomattox April 9, 1865. He was married to Sara Elizabeth Carnes Wiley and together they had at least 8 children.
