John Basil Lamar with the brother of Mary Ann Lamar who married Howell Cobb, one of the leading political figures of the mid-19th century. Lamar was involved in farming and overseeing a massive complex of plantations covering more than 50,000 acres in 13 Georgia and Florida counties. Col. Lamar was mortally wounded at the Battle of Crampton’s Gap on September 14, 1862, while serving as aide-de-camp to Howell Cobb, who commanded the brigade.
