CSA 12c, 10¢ greenish blue (4 large even margins) tied ANDERSON C.H. S.C. MAR 21 (1864) on blue and white wallpaper cover to J.E. Hagood Esq. (Clerk of Court) Pickens C.H., S.C. with 2-page soldier’s letter (click here to read page 2) written in bold pen and headed Camp near Bull’s Gap Tenn March 18th 1864 and signed W.E. Walters. The Battle of Bull’s Gap took place in November of that year with a Confederate victory. Walters is thanking Hagood for a generous donation to help replace money which belonged to other soldiers (privates who are in destitute circumstances) which he lost. “(Thanks for) this and other donations in a great measure to replace the amount so that helpless women & children might not be made sufferers by my misfortune.”  $900.

James Earle Hagood was in the mercantile business and Clerk of Circuit Court during the War, frequently called upon to perform services for soldiers away in the army and their families.
