(Virginia & Tennessee Railroad) Bristol, V.&T.R.R. Sharp strike of circular station handstamp and matching "PAID" on homemade to John H. Tyree Esq., Lynchburg Va.; original Dec. 7, 1864 enclosure noted on verso but no longer accompanies, Very Fine, the only recorded PAID use, Ex Oswald, Myerson, and Hannen. CCV $1,000. $850.
John Henley Tyree (1806-1876) was a successful tobacconist in Lynchburg. He built the picturesque Tyreeanna plantation about three miles below Lynchburg on the James River and named it for himself and his wife. The mansion was converted into a hotel in the 1880s but burned down in 1936.
