JOHNSON’S ISLAND, OHIO: US 65, 3¢ rose tied cork with OLD POINT COMFORT VA AUG 25 double-circle datestamp on tiny enameled lady’s cover with lovely die-cut and silver-edged top back flap (as well as bottom flap) addressed to Lieut. Robt Gorrell 57th N.C. Regmt Johnston’s (sic) Island Ohio with endorsement “By Flag of Truce via Fortress Monroe” and “Prisoner of War” with manuscript examined marking at left center “Ex FWR.” (examined marking listed in Harrison as used most of 1863-1864). $550.

Robert D. Gorrell was 27 years old when he enlisted from Forsyth County, NC, as a corporal. He mustered into company D, North Carolina 57th Infantry. He was captured November 7, 1863, at Rappahannock Station, Va., and confined to Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC. He was transferred November 14, 1863, to Johnson's island where he took the oath of allegiance on June 13, 1865. He rose in the ranks to captain as of October 15, 1863. The NC 57th Infantry was part of the Army of Northern Virginia.
