1st Sgt. Samuel P. Timmons was only 19 years old when he enlisted as a private on August 1, 1861. He served in the 1st Ohio Infantry. He was taken prisoner 9-19-1863 at Chickamauga, Ga, where he was also wounded. He died Sept 16, 1864, in Andersonville of ulcers. His gravesite is #8914 in Andersonville National Cemetery. Letters written by Timmons are housed in the Duke University Library. Including the one in this cover.
