US 65, 3¢ rose tied target and POINT LOOKOUT cds with (Richmond) straightline DUE 10 on cover to Miss Mary Lou Jones, Martinsville Henry Co(unty) Va, with endorsement “From C.W. Jones, Prisoner of War” and “for Flag of Truce.” Stamp oxidation and gum staining. $500.

C.W. Jones, 24th Virginia Cavalry, Army of Northern Virginia, wrote a book In Prison at Point Lookout about his experiences there, first published at Martinsburg but often quoted thereafter. Jones was captured at Charles City Courthouse, Virginia, December 13, 1863. The 24th Regiment, Virginia Cavalry was organized in June 1864, by consolidating eight companies of the 42nd Virginia Cavalry and two companies of Dearing's Confederate Cavalry. This unit served in General Gary's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia, and fought in various conflicts around Richmond. Later, it was involved in the Appomattox Campaign and surrendered with 19 officers and 144 men.
