William H. Johnston was 22 years old when he enlisted June 22, 1861, as a private. He was wounded May 31, 1862, at Seven Pines, Virginia, in the leg and hand. He was taken prisoner at Gettysburg July 1, 1863. He was confined at Fort Delaware, Johnson’s island, and Point Lookout. He was received for exchange May 22, 1865, at Cox’s Landing, James River, Virginia for exchange. He was paroled May 12, 1865, at Charlotte, NC. Johnston was promoted to captain on May 11, 1862.
