CAMP HOFFMAN, POINT LOOKOUT, MARYLAND: US 65, 3¢ rose (tiny faults) tied by target of POINT LOOKOUT MD DEC 10 ’64 duplex from R.W. Steger, Co. A, 3rd Division, a POW at Point Lookout, to his wife "Care of John O. Steger," his half-brother and postmaster of Richmond; 3nice strike of the prison's octagonal examined handstamp (PWH-17); APPARENTLY HANDED DIRECTLY TO STEGER BY A POSTAL CLERK, AS NO CONFEDERATE POSTAGE WAS CHARGED; top flap missing and lower right corner slightly clipped, top back flap missing, Ex Arnold Rosenberg, Peter Powell, and Galen Harrison. $425.

Roger Williams Steger (1834-1877) was born in Amelia County. He attended VMI 1851-52 and was principal of the Amelia Academy. His mother was Mary Pendleton Cooke, a relative of JEB Stuart's wife, Flora Cooke. Gen. Stuart and the Stegers were well acquainted. Roger enlisted May 9, 1861, at Amelia Courthouse as a private in Company G, Virginia First Cavalry, Army of Northern Virginia. He was detailed on Gen. JEB Stuart's staff. He was taken prisoner September 30, 1863, at Fredericksburg and confined to Point Lookout. He was paroled April 27, 1865, at Manchester. Steger rose through the ranks to captain and quartermaster on Stuart’s staff. His half-brother was John Overton Steger, a prominent Richmond attorney, who later served as postmaster of Richmond during the Civil War, and had been a delegate to Virginia's secession convention in 1861.
