POINT LOOKOUT, MARYLAND (CAMP HOFFMAN): US 65, 3¢ rose, tied by target cancel with matching POINT LOOKOUT / MD // NOV / 10 (1864) CDS with January 16 (1864) RICHMOND / Va. DUE 10 applied when it crossed the lines to Alexander white, Salem, Roanoke County, Virginia. Mandated endorsement of “S White, Co C 2nd Va Cava” and “By flag of truce.” Usual light strike of CSA catalog type PHW-7, type B octagonal censor’s examined handstamp, tiny sealed tear at top edge, otherwise Very Fine. Samuel White (1841-1922) enlisted on May 14, 1861, at Salem, Virginia, as a 19 year old farmer. He was mustered in as a private in Co A, 9th Virginia infantry. A year later he was transferred to the Virginia Salem Flying Light Artillery, and later to Co C, 2nd Virginia Cavalry. He was taken prisoner at Hagerstown, Md., and exchanged a year later. He was again taken prisoner May 24, 1864, at Fort Kennon, Va. He was confined at Fort Monroe under orders of Gen. Butler and held hostage for colored troops. He was sent to Point Lookout July 15, 1864, and exchanged March 6, 1865. Military records included with the lot.
