JOHNSON’S ISLAND, SANDUSKY, OHIO: 3¢ rose #65 (small faults and scuff on cover to right of stamp) tied by a light SANDUSKY / O // XX ‘64 with a clear black target to the right.  Manuscript examiner’s marking at upper right.  An example of the infrequently seen mail FROM A POW IN ONE PRISON TO A POW IN ANOTHER PRISON. This letter was sent to Capt. Ben N. Cocke, CSA Officers Camp Point Lookout MD. 2014 CSA Certificate. [MD] [OH] $600. 

Benjamin N. Cocke, Captain, acting Capt. B. N. Cocke's Company of Independent Cavalry*, enlisted July 17, 1862 in Crawford County by Col. Cockrel for the war, recorded February 12, 1863 as absent with leave since January 20, 1863, elected Captain, Jackman's Regiment, August 31, 1862, captured by enemy at battle Helena, Arkansas July 4, 1863; forwarded next day to Memphis, Tenn. on steamer Tycoon, and on following day to Cairo, Ill. on steamer Silver Moon, arrived Military Prison, Alton, Illinois July 9; forwarded to Johnson's Island prison August 6, 1863, recorded on November 24, 1863 as age 27, born in Virginia, resident of St. Clair County, Mo.; transferred to Baltimore February 9, 1864 arriving on the 14th; transferred to Fort Delaware prison June 23, 1864; paroled October 6, 1864 and transferred to Point Lookout, Md., exchanged October 11, 1864, no further information.

* This company subsequently became Company B, 16th Regiment Missouri Infantry, which regiment appears to have been designated at various times as 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 14th, 15th, and Jackman's Regiment Missouri Infantry.
