Franklin Spencer was 24 years old when he enlisted as a private June 18, 1861, and was mustered into Company A 6th Ohio Infantry. He was discharged for promotion November 4, 1861, and commissioned into Company G, 17th Ohio Infantry. He was listed as captured September 20, 1863, at Chickamauga, Ga. and confined at Macon, Ga., and Columbia, SC. He was cited for gallantry at the Battle of Chickamauga where he was captured. Spencer signed a bogus Bill of Exchange and voted in the presidential election at Camp Sorghum, Columbia, SC. He was promoted to captain March 23, 1864, but not mustered.
