CAMP SORGHUM, COLUMBIA, S.C.: US 65, 3¢ rose (faulty) tied by circle of wedges with WASHINGTON, D.C. DEC. 18, '64 double-circle postmark on prisoner-of-war cover from Maj. C.K. Fleming interned at Camp Sorghum, addressed to Miss Mary H. Carmer Care of L.C. Popham, 945 Broadway, New York; included is original poignant love letter is datelined "C.S. Military Prison Camp, Near Columbia, S.C., Dec. 9/64" with a proposal of marriage, "I hope My own dear Mary that you will consent to our being married when I return. I hope you will say yes." Obviously, she did. Click here to see pages 2-3 of the letter. The flap is missing, and cover has a couple small tears at top. Scarce, 20 COVERS RECORDED BY HARRISON. $750.

Charles K. Fleming (1831-1919) lived in Rockingham Vt when he enlisted 8-12-1862 as a 1st lieutenant. A month later he was commissioned into G Company of VT 1st Heavy Artillery. He was listed as taken prisoner June 23, 1864, at Weldon Railroad (Petersburg). He was paroled Feb 28, 1865 (place not stated) and discharged May 15, 1865. He died in 1919. He was confined earlier at Roper Hospital in Charleston. His wife was addressee Mary Hill Fleming (1843-1924). They are buried together in Scarsdale, NY.
