CSA 11-AD, 10¢ blue (4 huge to ample margins) tied RICHMOND / VA. cds on cover with State of Virginia, Executive Department imprint (S-VA-01, CV $500) at lower left of envelope, embossing under top back flap “Manufactured by Waterlow & Sons, 65 to 68 London Wall, London.” to George W. Sites, Esqr., General Hospital No. 3, Lynchburg, Va. $250.

George Walter Sites was a 27-year-old newspaper editor from Forsyth County, NC, when he enlisted as a private in Company D, NC 21st Infantry at Salem NC. He was detailed 11-7-61 to the Medical Director’s Office, Army of the Potomac, Manassas, Va., on hospital duty as a steward. He was discharged 6-12-62 per special orders No. 202, and was appointed secretary to chief medical officer of Army of Northern Virginia 9-10-62 by General Joseph E. Johnston. In August/Sept 1864, he was still listed as a hospital steward with extra pay. Several special orders on file, reporting to hospital in Gordonsville, Danville, etc. One per Director. Wm. A. Carrington, Medical Director at Richmond. Described as 5’ 9” tall, fair complexion, black eyes, and dark brown hair.
