APR circular datestamp on illuminated State of Virginia Office of the Auditor of Public Accounts (type S-VA-05, CCV $750) with restored piece into the imprint, bold addressed in pen to Col. John S. Hoffman, 31st Vat Regt, Pegram’s Brigade, Earley’s Division, Ewell’s Corps A.N.Va. – wonderful military address. Ex David Burton. $350.

John Stringer Hoffman (1821-1877) was a 40-year-old lawyer when he enlisted June 15, 1861, at Clarksburg West Virginia as a captain in Company C, Virginia 31st Infantry. He was promoted to major in December 1861 and colonel May 1862. Detailed military records available. Wounded (foot amputated) at Hatcher’s Run February 5, 1865, taken prisoner April 3, 1865, at Richmond where he took the oath of allegiance May 23, 1865. 1872 he was elected judge, WV Supreme Court of Appeals. Born in Weston, WV and buried in Clarksburg, WV.
