RICHMOND Va. MAR 5 1862 boldly struck CDS with matching DUE 5 on OFFICIAL BUSINESS. imprinted legal-size envelope signed by “C.B. Gibson, Surg. PACS “(Provisional Army Confederate States) at upper left. Addressed to Capt. L.P. Miller Company K 21st NC Regiment, Manassas; bit of soiling and minor wrinkling but nice medical use. $375.

Dr. Charles Bell Gibson was in charge of General Hospital No. 1 in Richmond and the first surgeon general of Virginia. He was appointed by Governor John Letcher as such on April 15, 1861, before Virginia joined the Confederacy. Captain Francis P. Miller, Army of Northern Virginia, was later killed at Sharpsburg at age 29. His general said of him “(he was) a brave soldier, he fought in many battles.”
