CSA 4, 5¢ blue pair tied NEW ORLEANS LA 2 APR circular datestamp on legal over with military department imprint of “Confederate States of America, Head Quarters, Dept. No. 1, Official Business.” Addressed to Brig. Genl. D. Ruggles Comdg 1st Brigade La. Vols, Corinth, Miss. with pencil docketing up left side “March 1862 Returned Corinth 1862 War Records 1862.” Top back flap missing, both stamps and cover with noticeable defects but the imprint is an UNLISTED VARIETY in the CSA Catalog, similar to WD-ZA-02, which catalogs $500. $250.

Daniel Ruggles (1810-1897) was a Confederate brigadier general and a division commander at the Battle of Shiloh. Despite being a known abolitionist from Massachusetts and serving in the U.S. Army, Ruggles married a woman from Virginia who held Confederate beliefs.
