Sgt. Maj. Joseph McMurran served in Company G, 4th Virginia Infantry, the renowned "Stonewall Brigade" fighting in battles at Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Bethesda Church, Monocacy Junction, Snicker's Ferry , Kernstown, Newton, Winchester and Gettysburg where he was wounded on July 3,1863 and at Winchester on August 7, 1864, captured at Kernstown. Educated at Delaware College and Union College in New York, received his degree from Hampden-Syndey in 1852. Taught school in Alabama and Virginia before the war; after the war he taught a year in South Carolina, and ran a drug store in Shepherdstown, WV.
