U27 3¢ star-die tied with grid with faint matching ATHENS / Ga. CDS at left, addressed to Doct. E.D. Newton, Portsmouth, Va. Care of Capt. Todd, 4th Regiment Ga. Volunteers. CSA Use of U.S. Postage. $90.

Dr. Edwin Dorset Newton (1835-1917), a son of John Hamlin Newton (1800-1889), was a businessman and manufacturer from Athens, Georgia. His sister was Ann Olivia Newton Cobb AKA Mrs. Lamar Cobb, son of Howell Cobb. A very lengthy medical and military bio is available on Find A Grave at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/14683007/edwin-dorset-newton He served as Surgeon and Assistant Surgeon in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon from Georgia April 27, 1861, and ordered to report to the 4th Georgia Infantry, positively dating this as Confederate Use of U.S. Postage.
