Samuel McGowan
served 13 years in the S.C. Statehouse and served as staff captain during the Mexican War. In 1861, he was a Major General of militia and commanded a brigade at the reduction of Fort Sumter. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1863, wounded four times, and surrendered with Gen. R.E. Lee at Appomattox.
