James Eugene Bell was commissioned into Field & Staff of the Confederate States Army Medical Staff. He initially enlisted March 4, 1862, as a private and mustered into Company D, Georgia 9th Battalion Infantry. He was promoted November 18, 1862, to Assistant Surgeon.
