James McTavish Bee was born on May 2, 1834, in Camden, South Carolina, and served as a Confederate general during the Civil War. He was known for his gallantry and his death at the First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run). He is known for his memorable phrase, "There is Jackson standing like a stone wall," which is credited with giving rise to the nickname "Stonewall Jackson." Bee was mortally wounded during the battle and died the following day. Bee's early life and career were intertwined with his family's legacy in South Carolina.
