James Leftwich Brown (1815-1872) was married to Mary Virginia Early (1823-1864) in 1847. She was the daughter of Bishop John Early (1786-1873) who was instrumental in organizing the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and was their bishop from 1854. He began his labors among the slaves of Thomas Jefferson. This letter was addressed to Mary’s brother, Rev. Thomas Howard Early (1828-1904), also a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. She and Brown had at least ten children.
