Richard Irby was a wealthy plantation owner from a prominent Nottoway County family who had service as first lieutenant and later captain of Company G, 18th Virginia infantry beginning in April 1861. He is listed as wounded at Second Manassas but served throughout the war and was paroled April 19, 1865.
