Mann Satterwhite Valentine, Jr. (1824-1892) assembled a collection of art, archival, ethnographic and history objects at his home. When he died in 1892, he directed his brother and sons to open up the home as a museum to the public and left an endowment to support it. The Valentine Museum was the first museum in Richmond. It is still a fixture in Richmond.
