Dr. George William Bagby (1828 - 1883) was a physician and well known as an editor of the Southern Literary Messenger from 1859 until near the end of the Civil War; he was also the Richmond correspondent of the Charleston Mercury during the war where he wrote under a pen name that enabled him to criticize people such as Gen. Robert E Lee and President Jefferson Davis.
