John Rutherfoord (1792-1866) was Acting Governor of Virginia 1841-42. He graduated from Princeton in 1816, studied law and was admitted to the bar. He served in a militia unit called the Richmond Fayette artillery, advancing through the ranks to regimental commander with the rank of Colonel. He was a member of the secession board before the war began. The Rutherfoord papers, 1754-1931, are housed at Duke University.
