CSA 4a, 5¢ dark blue (defective) tied RICHMOND Va. JUN 19 1862 circular datestamp (Powell type 3b with broken N used only in June 1862) on cover to Miss Anne E. Wade, Richmond Va. with notched ADVERTISED 2 (type U, CV $500) and JUN 20 CDS. Original 4-page soldier’s letter from G. T. Willis of Hampton’s Legion on detached duty in Franklin, Va., dated May 18, 1862, but doubtless took time to get to Richmond, likely by another soldier headed that way. Typical in that it is also an OVERPAID DROP use (SCV $400 alone), likely for that reason, not uncommon. In his letter, Willis says that SC is entirely too far from Virginia for him ever to return there and he has made up his mind to stay in Virginia after the war. Doubtless Anne had a “little” to do with that. He says his brigade has been detached from Pickett’s Division. Ex Harry Muldrow. $350.
