CSA 4, 5¢ blue, tied RICHMOND Va. OCT 26 1862 CDS on small neat commercially made cover addressed to Capt. William H. Toler, Company F, 14th Reg. Louisiana Volunteers, Institute Hospital, Richmond, Va. with notation at left “Politeness of Dr. Clarke” and “Ward R.” Ex Hubert Judd, Bruce Gimelson, and David Burton. $400.

William H. Toler enlisted as a captain and was commissioned into Co. C, Louisiana 14th Infantry on June 1, 1861. Toler was badly wounded in the thigh on June 30, 1862, at the Battle of Glendale (Frayser’s Farm) on the sixth day of the Seven Days Battles (Peninsula Campaign). The unit suffered a heavy number of casualties and, thereafter, surviving members of the regiment dubbed the battle "the Slaughterhouse.” Toler was promoted to Major on August 15, 1862, and later to Lt. Col.
