CSA 1-2- v5, 5¢ green gooseneck variety (position 25) tied together on cover with CSA 4, 5¢ blue by CHATTANOOGA Ten. MAY 27 1862 circular datestamp over watermarked US U26, 3¢ red star-die entire erroneously addressed to President A H Stephens, Richmond, Virginia (he was Vice President, not president), small sealed tear at top and top back flap mostly removed as usual with this correspondence. Also usual secretarial docketing on verso “M.M. Mintz Chattanooga Ten. May 26th 1862 CaptWho are & are not exempt.” Nice mixed franking with scarce variety and used over star-die. Michael Madison Mintz (1818-1901) was born in the Fairfield District of S.C. but early on moved to Jackson County, Ga. Before the war, he was a major in the Georgia Militia, and was a prominent Georgia politician. At the beginning of the war, Major Mintz raised a company from Jackson County which was mustered in as Georgia 43rd Infantry. He was elected captain and commissioned into Co. G, Georgia 43rd Infantry. His wife was Joicy Anderson Mintz (1823-1895); together they had at least eight children.
